The Session and Deacons of the First United Presbyterian Church of West Pittston are planning their annual Strawberry Festival and Mini-Flea Market on Saturday, June 5, in the courtyard of the church. The church is located on the corner of Exeter Avenue and Warren Street.

The Flea Market and Strawberry Festival will open rain or shine, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. The public is invited to come and do a little shopping at the flea market, eat some hot dogs and wimpies and top it all off with some cake, strawberries and ice cream provided by the Deacons.

Tickets for the strawberries and ice cream are $4 and are available at the door.

Bereavement Support

The Healing Hearts Bereavement Support Team will continue its series of sessions for anyone experiencing the loss of a loved one. Sessions will be held every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. through June 15 at the Parish Center of St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William St., Pittston.

Some of topics to be discussed include the importance of memories, living a new life and the stages of grief.

Patriotic Concert

The Wyoming Avenue Christian Church, 881 Wyoming Avenue in Kingston and its Concert Choir will be presenting a Patriotic Concert on Sunday, June 13 in the church’s sanctuary at 7 p.m. We have a variety of guests for the evening along with the choir, which includes the U.S. Marines, as visit from Betsy Ross and military veteran soloists. The bazaar opens on Friday July 9 at 5 p.m. with Flaxy Morgan performing 7-11 p.m., reopens on Saturday, July 10 with Changes performing from 7-11 p.m. and on Sunday July 11 at 5 p.m. with The Cadillacs performing from 7-11.

W-B Flea Market

Holy Saviour Church, East End section, Wilkes-Barre, will hold a Flea Market on Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12, 2010 in the Church Hall at 54 Hillard St, Wilkes-Barre. Hours are 8 am – 2 pm both days.

This year, the Flea Market will also be open to additional outside vendors who are interested in selling their crafts, artwork or other items. One table for the two-day event is $15, or $25 for two tables. Any vendor interested in taking part should contact Anita at 822-1186 to reserve space and discuss details for set up. Space is limited.

A large variety of gently used items will be available for sale, from home furnishings and decorations to collectibles and athletic equipment. The church will also be holding a bake sale during the hours of the market, featuring many homemade cakes and sweets. Lunch items will be available starting at 11 am both days.

The title for Vacation Bible School 2010 is “Baobab Blast: God’s Great Get-Together”. Vacation Bible School will be held from June 21-25 at Help of Christians. It runs from 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon each day. VBS takes place on the African Savannah where we will discuss Bible Stories, sing songs, create crafts, play games and participate in community service projects. Children in grades Pre-K 4 through Grade 5 (Sept 2010) are invited to register. Young people in grades 6 on up are invited to volunteers as assistants and group leaders. Registration forms can be found in the back of each of our churches.

If you or someone you know has ever thought about becoming a Catholic, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) might be for you. The Inquiry phase of the RCIA will begin shortly. It is an opportunity for someone who is interested in becoming a Catholic to ask questions about our faith. There are no expectations or obligations that you continue with the RCIA. Father Maloney is leading a Scripture Study of the Letter to the Hebrews. There are two programs, one on Tuesday mornings from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. and one on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Both programs will be held in the Religious Education Center at St. Mary, Help of Christians, Main Street, Pittston. This study examines and enters into the priestly ministry of Jesus and considers our role in the Kingdom of God today. The Scripture Study combines personal Bible reading and study, faith sharing, lecture and prayer in an informal setting. Come and join us and learn to make the real connection between your faith and your everyday life! The program is open to all from the greater Pittston area.

The Pittston Catholic Youth Group will meet this week on Friday, June 4th at 6:30 p.m. It will be a joint meeting with the Hazleton youth group. We will depart from the Oblate Seminary on a school busthat will take us to and from Hazleton. Together we will be welcoming and greeting the current Superior General, Very Rev. Michael Piscopo, O.S.J. The permission slips for the Light the Fire Youth Rally, that will be held on July 1, are due by June 17. The discounted fee for active youth group members is $5. June 7 – 11 all of the Oblates of Saint Joseph of both the Pennsylvania & California Provinces will be together for their annual spiritual retreat and conferences for ongoing formation. The Superior General will travel out to CA with the Oblate priests of our area and guide the weeklong retreat and conferences.

All parents anticipating the Baptism of their first child are required to attend Baptismal instruction before scheduling the Baptism of the child. The next session will be held Tuesday, June 8 in the parish center from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

The parishes of the Pittston area will sponsor a combined Vacation Bible School beginning on Monday, June 21 and concluding Friday, June 25. You are asked to register early so we can plan for all those attending. This year there will be a new program for children who will enter pre-school age 4. We are in need of student volunteers who would be able to earn service hours. A few adult volunteers are also needed. The Wyoming Valley CYC 23rd Annual Golf Classic in honor of Msgr. Andrew J. McGowan will be held on Friday, July 9, with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. The Golf Classic will be held at Blue Ridge Trail Golf Course in Dorrance. The Classic is open to the general public. Laflin Borough will be holding a Summer Camp June 28-August 2 for children ages 4-12. Deadline to register is Memorial Day. Cost is $15 per child. More information and registration forms are available at the Church Office.

Up & Over, a retreat at Fatima Renewal Center, is a weekend- long retreat scheduled for June 11-13 for students in 7th and 8th grade. The weekend encourages teamwork and helping themselves and others overcome obstacles in their life. The cost is $100 including all meals. St. Peter’s Strawberry Social will be held this Wednesday, June 2, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the church. Admission, priced at $5.00, includes strawberry shortcake and a beverage. Wimpies, hot dogs, and salads will also be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Pastor Rick Rock of St. John’s Primitive Methodist Church.

Sunday School will break for summer. The last day of classes is Sunday, June 6. Following our worship service on that date, the congregation is invited to a picnic, hosted by the Sunday School, at the Hughestown Pavilion. Attendees should sign up at the rear of the church.

On June 13, we will begin our Summer Worship Schedule. Holy Communion will begin at 9:00 a.m., rather than 10:00 a.m. Please note the change.

Vacation Bible School will be held from Sunday, July 11, to Thursday, July 15 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Closing exercises will be held on Friday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. This year’s theme is Baobab Bible Blast, God’s Great Get Together. Pre registration is encouraged, and registration forms may be picked up at the church. Volunteers are needed to assist with VBS.

Memorial Day masses Monday, May 31 at 9 a.m. in St. Mary’s Cemetery and at 11 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul’s Cemetery. Please note if the weather is poor at the times of the Masses, the services will be held in the respective churches.

High school youth group will meet today from 6-9 p.m. in the St. Lawrence O’Toole Church hall, 620 S. Main St., Old Forge, with other youth groups. New members are welcome.

First Friday healing Mass June 4 at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 715 Hawthorne St. Come and receive the healing that only Christ can give.

Youth club for children in grades 6-8 will meet Sunday, June 6 from 6:30-8 p.m. in SS. Peter and Paul’s Church, 1000 Main St. The group is currently conducting their annual “Parish Pets” project. Donations of dog and cat food, litter, or any other item you think a dog or cat might need can be placed in one of the donation boxes in the lobby of either church. All proceeds will benefit the SPCA.

St. Mary’s/SS. Peter and Paul’s Churches will publish a list of individuals in their parish bulletin who are graduating. Any person who would like to be included in this list should submit his or her name, school, grade, and degree to the parish office by calling 457-3412 by June 6.

Finance council will meet Thursday, June 10 at 7 p.m. in St. Mary’s Rectory, 715 Hawthorne St.
